Mind, matter and a bottle of water...

When referring to the human essence we usually use the term "spirit" or "soul". Our essence is our life force. It is what we feel when faced with certain situations in our existence. Fear, love, sympathy, hate, etc., are all responses to events that shape our life.

Scientists say that we only use around 10% of our brain. Whether that is true or not, we cannot judge as each individual is unique. What we can assume is that the material world somewhat restricts our spiritual side. By this I mean that in this dimension of existence we do not function at our full potential. It is impossible for us to shape events that will occur or change events that have already occured. Also, space and time prove quite tricky to tackle.

However, this "restriction" is most beneficial. We come into existence in order to learn. By doing so, we form an image of what is around us: the very world we live in. By far, the most important aspect of life is love. Without it, we are worthless. It is the fuel that drives us.

Perfect symmetry

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Can one speak of perfect symmetry? Let us consider the fact that matter is made up of tiny particles we call atoms. The atom can be defined as a particle which cannot be split by ordinary chemical processes. Unless of course, we resort to fission.

An object is symmetrical, if it can be split in half, each of the two halves being identical. A butterfly is the most common example of symmetry.

Anyway, due to the fact that matter as we know it has trillions of atoms, it cannot be separated into two distinct halves. A cup can be split in half but there will always be one extra (or less) atom to destroy the perfection.

To further illustrate this concept, picture the human being. We are almost symmetrical. The only thing that prevents us from being that way is the heart. It has no other peer. It sits there in the middle, doing what it knows best: destroying perfect symmetry.
